BECKY: (Special message from Coach Danelle)
Training for a fall marathon through the AZ summer is a challenge any way you look at it. But add in a few weeks of family vacation (with young kids=not a whole lot of time to go and train at will!), two already booked Ragnar trail races, sickness, and feeling “less than stellar” and you get an idea of what Becky had to endure this summer. She ran Chicago last year, with minimal training while still nursing her daughter, and really wanted to improve upon that time this year. She started out strong, but interruptions of a few weeks of vacation, several trail races and the AZ heat left her feeling fatigued. Even though she was eating well, doing her strength work and getting sleep, she still felt fatigue in the morning, depressed mood, stomach issues and dry eyes, to name a few symptoms. She chalked it all up to “getting older” but decided to have her hormone levels checked out anyway. The test revealed that her testosterone levels were about 0! She began HRT (hormone replacement therapy) and noticed a huge difference. So huge, that she blew her projected finish time out of the water and set a PR from the previous year in Chicago by over 40 minutes! Despite a less-than stellar training season, Becky was able to put it all together and have a great race! And words of wisdom: as she said, she thought her fatigue and other issues were just from “getting older”. Bottom line is if you have a feeling something is “off”, get it checked out!! Congrats Becky on persevering and having a great race! I am so proud of you!!!!
